Graduate research - Witch hazel and aphids
This aspect of Brian Rehill's dissertation research concerns biochemical and organismal influences on the fecundity, survival, and distribution of an aphid, Hormaphis hamelidis, that forms conical galls on the leaves of witch hazel, Hamamelis virginiana. The major focus is on aphid-induced beneficial biochemical changes in the host plant, but host and insect phenology and source-sink relationships have also been investigated.  We mapped Brian's field site to ease location of the trees by Brian and his assistants, create an informative graphic for the publication, and assist relocation of the trees for future study.

The cluster of green dots indicates the regional position of Brian's plot, just to the SE of Boalsburg, PA.  Click on the cluster to get a closer view.
